The Washington Kurdish Institute (WKI) extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mehdi Zana, the veteran Kurdish politician, writer, and former mayor of Kurdistani province Diyarbakır (Amed), who passed away on August 29, 2026, at the age of 85.
Mehdi Zana was elected mayor of Amed as an independent candidate in 1977 and became an important figure in modern Kurdish political history. He endured years of imprisonment, ultimately spending approximately 16 years behind bars. His life was marked by a steadfast commitment to Kurdish rights, dignity, and the preservation of Kurdish identity.
During this difficult time, WKI stands with Leyla Zana, the Zana family, his friends, and the Kurdish people in mourning this profound loss. Mehdi Zana’s courage, sacrifice, and lifelong service to his people will remain an enduring part of Kurdish history.
May he rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire future generations.
