The Washington Kurdish Institute (WKI) unequivocally condemns the recent attacks perpetrated by various terrorist factions, supported by Turkey, against the Kurdish population in Aleppo and its surrounding countryside.
Approximately 300,000 Kurds, displaced by Turkey’s invasion of Afrin in 2018, now face a dire situation, besieged and expelled by radical Syrian groups backed by Turkey. These groups are exploiting the ongoing conflict between the Syrian regime and al-Qaeda affiliates in Aleppo to further their agenda.
Turkish-supported factions have already begun committing atrocities against Kurdish men and women in a deliberate effort to ethnically cleanse the remaining displaced Kurdish population in Tal Rifaat and neighboring areas.
These recent developments in Syria have led to increased destruction and violations against civilians, exacerbating regional instability. The situation is compounded by the actions of the Assad regime, terrorist factions, and Turkey, all of which continue to perpetrate crimes against innocent populations.
We urge the United States and the European Union to exert pressure on Turkey to cease its ongoing and unjust campaign against the Kurds, which employs outlawed and terrorist groups to target defenseless civilians. The West, particularly the United States, bears a moral responsibility to protect the Kurds, who have steadfastly resisted terrorism and safeguarded international security and interests.
