The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDK) is a center-left Kurdish political party, founded in the Kurdish region of Iran upon Qazi Muhammad’s declaration of the independent Kurdish Mahabad Republic. The PDK engaged in guerilla warfare against the imperial Iranian regime and advocated for democratic federalism during the initial decades of the Islamic Republic. The party defines itself as a democratic socialist organization with economic, social, and political policy predicated on a belief of human equality and freedom, advocating a federal model of governance in Iran. The KDP also established in other parts of Kurdish regions like in Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. The modern PDK in Iran is called KDP-I (The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan). In 2006, the party KDP-I split into two parts: the larger KDP-I and KDP. Since March of 2016 the KDP-I re-initiated “Armed Struggle” guerilla operations against the Iranian regime, organizing a self-described Iranian Peshmerga. Currently the Secretary-General of KDP-I is Mustafa Hijri, who was elected to the role in 2008, at the Party’s 14th Congress. Recently on many occasions, the two KDP-I groups attempted to reconcile, however, as yet there has been no success.
