On November 21, 2016, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) issued a statement condemning the attacks by the Turkish warplanes on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Manbij. The statement said, “We are surprised by the international community’s silence during the repeated attacks by Turkey.” The SDC called the people of Manbij to stand against the Turkish occupation of the town after it was liberated by the SDF from ISIS in August of 2016.
On November 20, the Turkish warplanes targeted the positions of the Manbij Military Council (MMC) who are part of the SDF in the west of Manbij, resulting in several casualties.
The following is the text of the statement:
“The Turkish state began with the occupation of Jarablus and then continued with the occupation of other areas in northern Syria. The Turkish state is observing no limits in its operations and continuing to attack the revolutionary forces, using warplanes to again attack the town of Manbij. The occupying army is attacking both civilians and the Manbij Military Council (MMC) who have been protecting the civilians. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) completed their task in Manbij and withdrew to the east of the Euphrates River, but the malicious intentions of [Turkey’s President] Erdogan to occupy new regions and restore the Ottoman Empire were again proven out.
We know that the Turkish state will not withdraw from any occupied area. We call on the international community to stop this blatant assault by Turkey on the city of Manbij. The SDF and the People Defense Units (YPG) will not remain silent in the face of these attacks, but its will defend Manbij and assist the MMC. The international coalition know that MMC is the only force protecting the city of Manbij while its people govern it. We are surprised by the international community’s silence during the repeated attacks by Turkey. We also call upon the people of Manbij to stand unified against the Turkish state’s occupation and we will be side by side with them and respond to all attacks against them.”
