On April 7, 2016, Urban Ahlin the Speaker of the Sweden’s Parliament received Dr. Mohammed Yousif the Speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan’s Parliament in his office.
Both the Speakers discussed issues related to the Middle East, Iraq, Syria as well as relations between the Kurdish and Swedish Parliament. The crises Kurds in Iraq and Syria are grappling with were also spoken about.
Both the Speakers also put emphasis on the necessity of European countries’ support for Iraqi Kurds to solve their constitutional and economic crises. Fighting terrorism was another issue discussed at the meeting.
“Your duty is very difficult in the Middle East while mine is easy in Sweden,” Speaker Aylin told Dr. Mohammed.
On April 5, Speaker Muhammed started his official visit to Sweden. In a speech he gave to some Swedish MPs and the Kurdish diaspora on April 6, Dr. Mohammed spoke about Kurds right to self-determination, fight against ISIS and financial and constitutional crises in Iraqi Kurdistan. On the same day, Dr. Mohammed was received by Annika Söder the Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
