At least 65 died Friday as a boat carrying refugees and migrants from Turkey capsized in the Aegean Sea, International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) said, and according to local refugee authority at least 34 Kurds from Iraqi Kurdistan region are among those drowned.
Bakir Ali, head of returning refugees association, told GK channel at least 34 of those aboard the capsized boat were residents of the Kurdistan Region.
“There were a number of children and women among those who died,” Ali said. “At least 12 of whom were from the Rania town, 13 others from Pishdar and another 9 from Piramagrun town of Sulaimani province.”
